On October 3, Russia attacked a Liberian-flagged cargo ship at a port in Ukraine's Odesa region on the Black Sea. The attack killed one crew member and wounded three others, while the remaining 13 crew members were evacuated to safety, according to Ukraine's maritime port administration.
The incident occurred against the backdrop of Russia's de facto renewal of its blockade on Ukrainian Black Sea ports since the summer, which has been disrupting trade routes, reducing grain and steel exports, and hitting the Ukrainian economy. One report on the same vessel described it as a Ukrainian-operated bulk carrier struck by drones off Chornomorsk.
New Attacks in the Following Days
Following that incident, Russia stepped up attacks on commercial vessels and port infrastructure in the region. According to Russia's Ministry of Defense, Russian forces struck four more dry cargo ships at the port of Chornomorsk, in the Bug estuary and in the northwestern Black Sea over the weekend, with further strikes reported overnight into October 5. Moscow also reported striking the port of Vylkove and fuel depots in Chornomorsk, claiming the targeted vessels were carrying military equipment and supplies, without identifying them. Those strikes caused fires that were later brought under control by firefighters, with no casualties reported in those cases.
The Ukrainian government reported last month that, since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russian attacks have damaged or partially destroyed 1,173 port infrastructure facilities and 274 civilian vessels.
Broader Toll
Meanwhile, another report put the number of seafarers killed in the Black Sea since the start of the conflict at 60, following a previous attack on September 29 in which two Russian drones struck a grain-carrying vessel, killing its captain, leaving a second crew member wounded and a third missing, as UN mediators attempt to revive the grain corridor and a ceasefire in the area.
