The ship carried a shipment of big bags destined for the mining industry, classified as dangerous cargo for discharge according to the shipping schedule of Empresa Portuaria Iquique (EPI).
Operation Details
Cargo handling totaled 7,008 tons and took place over 8 work shifts under safety standards. The main destination for the supplies is the Austral plant, in the Coquimbo Region, where they are used to manufacture emulsion employed in mining processes, with a possible future expansion into the Peruvian market.
Vessel Characteristics
The Oriental Reefer, 28 years old, with a length overall of 150 meters and a beam of 22 meters, sails under the flag of the Bahamas and is officially classified as a refrigerated cargo vessel. The big bags were unloaded using the ship's onboard crane and placed onto truck trailers for final transport. The vessel is scheduled to depart from Molo Berth No. 1 on the afternoon of Thursday, October 22, bound for the Port of Guayaquil, Ecuador.
Joint Effort
EPI thanked the coordinated work of shipping agency B&M, the logistics management by CEC Chile, and the berth services provided by stevedoring company Conosur Logistic, along with the contribution of port workers and transport unions involved in the operation.
Cargo Diversification
The state port authority highlighted that this type of operation reflects its commitment to cargo diversification, consolidating Iquique as a competitive and efficient logistics hub, capable of connecting imports from the north with the industrial supply chain of the country's central-southern region and the markets of the Andean macrozone.
