Seatrium and Karpowership signed a contract for the development, major conversion and integration of five third-generation, Whale-class Powerships, ready to operate on hydrogen. The first vessel in the series will arrive at Seatrium's Tuas Boulevard Yard, in Singapore, in December 2027.
Scope of Work
Under the agreement, Seatrium will carry out the major conversion work along with equipment integration, mechanical completion and pre-commissioning tasks. Engineering activities are already underway as both companies move forward into the project's execution phase. According to Splash 247, the financial details of the contract were not disclosed.
Whale-Class Features
The Whale class is Karpowership's highest-capacity design, comprising floating power plants capable of deploying up to 600 MW of immediate power. The vessels feature hydrogen-ready multi-fuel power generation systems and onboard integrated substations that connect directly to national power grids, allowing them to begin generating electricity in as little as 30 days.
Background of the Partnership
The contract builds on a Letter of Intent (LOI) signed in August 2025, which covered three FSRU conversions and the possible integration of up to six new Powerships. The relationship between the two companies dates back to 2018, during which Seatrium completed seven FSRU conversion projects for Karpowership and secured the eighth and ninth such projects this year.
Statements
Alvin Gan, Executive Vice President of Repairs and Upgrades at Seatrium, noted that this milestone marks the company's first major conversion and integration work for Karpowership's Whale-class Powerships. Meanwhile, Gokhan Kocak, Chief Technical Operations Officer at Karpowership, stated that the new generation of Powerships demonstrates the company's commitment to innovation, operational excellence and energy security.
