SFL Corporation Ltd. announced that it has reached an agreement for the construction of two Very Large Ammonia Carriers (VLAC) with a capacity of 93,000 cubic meters, marking the company's entry into a new fleet segment. The total newbuilding cost is estimated at approximately USD 216 million, with delivery expected from the second quarter of 2028.
Charter Contracts
Alongside the vessel order, SFL signed long-term charter contracts with a major undisclosed European oil company, adding a minimum of approximately USD 162 million to its fixed-rate charter backlog. The length of the initial charter period will be determined within the next six months, at which point the backlog could increase further, and the charterer will also have the option to extend the contracts for up to four years.
Technical Specifications
The new vessels will be capable of carrying a wide range of petrochemical gases and will feature dual-fuel propulsion, along with state-of-the-art technology aimed at optimizing fuel efficiency and cargo capacity.
Company Statements
Ole B. Hjertaker, CEO of SFL Management AS, noted that the gas carrier project represents another key investment for SFL, as it brings in assets in a new segment, and highlighted that the charterer is a European oil company with an investment-grade rating, which reinforces SFL's position as a maritime logistics asset provider. Hjertaker added that, taking into account the acquisitions and charter extensions announced so far in 2026, the company has added more than USD 1.3 billion to its fixed-rate charter backlog during the year.
