Shell and Singapore LNG Corporation (SLNG) announced on Friday, October 9, the successful import of the first ISCC EU-certified bio-LNG cargo in Singapore, following the arrival of the LNG carrier Macoma at the SLNG Terminal. According to the companies, the milestone marks an important step in exploring biomethane as a lower-carbon energy solution in the country.
Origin of the fuel
The biomethane, certified under the ISCC EU scheme, was sourced in the United States and mass-balanced through the pipeline to a liquefaction plant, being integrated into a conventional LNG cargo supplied by Shell for delivery to Singapore. This mass balance method allows existing LNG infrastructure to be used to introduce certified renewable gas without the need to build dedicated facilities.
Terminal certification
SLNG obtained ISCC EU certification for its onshore infrastructure services, which include storage, regasification, send-out, bunkering and road transport, becoming one of the first terminals in the region to achieve this. The certification allows customers to trace and account for the green methane molecules allocated to the plant's LNG supplies through the mass balance system.
Leong Wei Hung, Chief Executive Officer of SLNG, noted that bio-LNG is a pathway that can contribute significantly and within a relatively short timeframe to both the decarbonization and energy security of Singapore and other regions of the world. He added that a solid foundation of certification and recognition is needed across the entire LNG ecosystem for this fuel to reach its full potential, and that SLNG took the first step by certifying its terminal under the ISCC EU scheme.
Shell Singapore, formerly known as Shell Eastern, is one of the companies licensed to supply LNG as a marine fuel in the country. In addition, Singapore is moving forward with the construction of a third jetty that will be dedicated to the small-scale business and bunkering.
