- Singapore-Norway research grant call targets alternative fuel infrastructure and bunkering
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), the Research Council of Norway (RCN) and the Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI) have launched a joint research grant call to develop solutions supporting the decarbonization of international shipping. The initiative seeks to bring together the research, technology and industry capabilities of both countries' maritime ecosystems to address shared technological and operational challenges.
Three focus areas
The call will concentrate on three pillars: alternative fuels and energy infrastructure, with improvements in the safety and handling of alternative marine fuels, bunkering and storage technologies, and advances in charging infrastructure for electric vessels; vessel energy efficiency and emissions reduction, through technologies that optimize onboard performance and energy consumption; and digitalization of greener operations, including voyage optimization, just-in-time arrivals, autonomous operations and data sharing between ships and ports.
Funding and requirements
The SMI will make up to S$2.7 million available for research partners based in Singapore, while the RCN will offer up to NOK 20 million for Norwegian participants. Splash 247 puts that Norwegian figure at around US$2 million, while Manifold Times estimates it at about US$2.2 million. Each proposal must include research institutions and industry partners from both countries, and selected projects may receive funding for up to four years.
Background and timeline
The call builds on the memorandum of understanding on maritime research, development, education and training signed between the MPA and the RCN in April 2024, and is the third joint research call between Singapore and Norway, following those held in 2015 and 2018, which funded four projects in energy efficiency, emissions reduction and emerging technologies. Applications may be submitted from December 2, 2026 through January 20, 2027, with further information available through the Research Council of Norway.
