Maritime technology provider SmartSea has introduced SmartJourney and SmartAccess, two integrated platforms designed to help operators coordinate crew transit and manage secure access to vessels, terminals and offshore facilities. According to the company, the solutions link personnel travel logistics with digital identity and access control, giving ship managers, shipowners and port operators a single, coordinated view of personnel movements from departure through to embarkation.
SmartJourney: Transit Tracking
SmartJourney brings flight schedules, local transport, accommodation details and crew lists together in a single interface, aiming to overcome reliance on disparate systems that often leave travel planning vulnerable. By displaying real-time transit status, the system allows crewing offices to anticipate schedule changes and manage crew changes more efficiently, including responding to missed connections or itinerary changes before they affect crew rotations.
SmartAccess and Biometric Verification
SmartAccess, for its part, focuses on terminal and gangway management. Deployed at port entry points, security gates, gangways and offshore facilities, it verifies personnel credentials, required certifications and entry permits before authorizing access, in line with ISPS security regulations. The system also incorporates SmartSea's FacePod biometric units to cross-check physical site entry against records of the authorized workforce, reducing reliance on manual document checks.
Kris Vedat, CEO of SmartSea, noted that crew movements require constant coordination among travel coordinators, port agents, technical managers and the vessels themselves, and that when systems operate independently, small itinerary changes can create scheduling difficulties and additional administrative work. According to the executive, SmartJourney and SmartAccess give operators a clear picture of who is expected to arrive, their current transit status, and whether their access credentials are in order.
Both platforms are available for merchant vessel fleets, offshore support vessels (OSVs), maritime terminals and offshore energy sites. The company did not disclose pricing or mention any initial customers that have already implemented the systems.
