More than seventy representatives from the economic-financial departments of Spain's Port Authorities met on October 22 and 23, 2026 in Santander for the 18th Economic-Financial Coordination Meeting, organized by the Port Authority of Santander (APS) and Puertos del Estado, with the aim of analyzing the main challenges facing the sector.
Key topics of the meeting
Among the issues addressed were the development of financial planning, the European Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), the international economic outlook, the application of artificial intelligence to financial management, and possible extensions of concession terms—topics that, according to Info Puertos, directly affect investment capacity, transparency and the efficiency of the port network of general interest.
Remarks from the APS Chairman
The Chairman of the Port Authority of Santander, César Díaz, welcomed attendees and highlighted the role of economic-financial departments as a key element in ensuring financial sustainability, efficient use of resources and investment capacity for Port Authorities. Díaz noted that a port's competitiveness depends not only on its infrastructure but also on its ability to manage resources intelligently while anticipating the future, stressing that the contribution of these teams is essential for rigorous and transparent financial management.
Attendees and institutional framework
César Díaz was accompanied by the Director of Planning and Development at Puertos del Estado, Manuel Arana; the Deputy Director of Business and Economic-Financial Plans at Puertos del Estado, María Jesús Calvo; and the Director of the APS, Santiago Díaz Fraile. According to Info Puertos, Díaz emphasized that the role of these teams is decisive in sustaining ports' investment capacity and ensuring efficient use of resources.
Scale of the port system
Info Puertos noted that the Spanish port system comprises 28 port authorities managing 46 ports of general interest, and pointed out that the meeting aims to align methods and prepare port authorities for a scenario in which financial discipline must go hand in hand with investments in decarbonization, digitalization and capacity improvement.
