- Speedcast & SOYA IT Complete Remote Connectivity Upgrade For Wallenius Wilhelmsen RORO Fleet
Speedcast, a global communications and IT services provider, together with Soya IT Marine Solutions, has completed the implementation of enhanced digital connectivity solutions across 41 roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessels operated by shipping line Wallenius Wilhelmsen.
Technology deployed
The project, part of a connectivity transformation program led by Soya IT Marine Solutions, included the provision of a global WAN network, dual-LEO solutions from Starlink and Eutelsat OneWeb, Iridium Certus, and an LTE-based backup service for the entire RoRo fleet. According to the companies, this combination of hybrid solutions delivers ultra-high-bandwidth connectivity and a new level of digitalization for both corporate and crew communications, enabling managed access to enterprise software on the bridge and improved streaming and social media services for off-duty seafarers.
Company statements
James Trevelyan, Executive Vice President of Global Sales at Speedcast, noted that an upgrade program of this scale requires deep expertise in network management and configuration, and that the new partnership aims to make the vessels digitally future-ready, with secure real-time data and improvements in both operational performance and onboard working conditions. For his part, Thomas Bergefall, Vice President of Group IS/IT at Soya Group, stated that the goal was to modernize fleet connectivity while ensuring seamless integration with existing infrastructure and business systems, highlighting Speedcast's contribution of expertise in delivering the upgrade.
Remote implementation and fleet scope
The connectivity upgrades were carried out entirely remotely, through collaboration between Soya, which provides technical and operational support to the Wallenius Wilhelmsen fleet, and Speedcast's project management teams, who oversaw the remote commissioning. This approach proved essential given that the vessels remain in port for only a few hours and operate on a global scale. Wallenius Wilhelmsen is the world's largest operator of Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC) vessels and a leader in RoRo shipping and vehicle logistics, with a fleet of around 125 vessels serving 15 trade routes to six continents, alongside a global land-based distribution network, 66 processing centers and seven maritime terminals.
