The Suape Industrial Port Complex, in Pernambuco, received approval from Brazil's Navy for new depths in its inner channel, turning basin and liquid bulk berths, following the completion of dredging works. The measure will allow container ships up to 366 meters in length overall, such as those of the New Panamax class, to make better use of their cargo capacity once a maneuverability study scheduled for 2026 is completed.
New depths
According to Ordinance 190/2026, the inner channel now has a depth of 16.25 meters, while the turning basin and the PGL 3A and 3B liquid bulk berths reached 18.39 meters. The approval was based on hydrographic surveys and navigability assessments carried out by the Maritime Authority after the works were completed.
Statements
Suape's CEO, Armando Monteiro Bisneto, noted that the port authority is turning infrastructure investment into effective operational capacity, allowing vessels to operate under better loading conditions and increasing safety and efficiency. Infrastructure Director Renata Loyo highlighted the rigorous oversight of the dredging stages and hydrographic surveys that provided the technical basis for the approval. José Constantino, Director of Port Development and Management, added that the change will also benefit vessel scheduling and performance.
Investment
The dredging works, completed in January 2026, involved an investment of R$ 247 million, of which R$ 100 million came from the Ministry of Ports and Airports through the Novo PAC program, and R$ 147 million was contributed by the port authority itself. During the works, approximately 4.18 million cubic meters of sediment were removed.
Outer channel
Suape's outer channel already has an approved depth of 20 meters, achieved through dredging works completed in 2024 with an investment of R$ 140 million and approved in 2025, enabling the navigation of deep-draft vessels such as Suezmax-class tankers.
