Terminal Portuario Valparaíso (TPV) received and unloaded for the first time a shipment of 56 BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) units, intended for renewable energy storage. The equipment arrived from Asia aboard the vessel Jasmina D, in an operation the terminal described as a milestone for Chile's energy innovation.
Statements from TPV
Felipe Murúa, general manager of Terminal Portuario Valparaíso, noted that the company has long been preparing for the cargoes of the future and said that the 56 batteries are an example of how new industries bring logistics solutions that contribute to the development of renewable energy and the mitigation of climate change. He added that the terminal is proud to take part in an operation linked to the country's energy transition and decarbonization.
Technical Features
Gonzalo Matamala, CEO of Empresas Sagemar, explained that this is the first time batteries with this technology have arrived in Chile, manufactured specifically for projects of this kind. He noted that each unit weighs approximately 15 tons and is roughly half the size of a 20-foot container, which facilitates handling, transport and logistics efficiency. According to Matamala, the key function of this equipment is to store the clean energy generated by wind and photovoltaic farms in order to make the most of the country's renewable potential.
Scope of the Operation
According to mundo maritimo, the units are destined for a company in the energy sector, and the operation is the first of its kind at a port in Chile's central zone, expanding the range of cargo handled by the multipurpose terminal. jornal portuario, in its Portuguese-language edition, noted that the discharge represents a landmark for regional port logistics and strengthens the terminal's role in transporting equipment for renewable energy projects.
