Norwegian shipping company Utkilen took delivery on October 22 of the tanker M/T Listraum, powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), at the Icdas shipyard in Turkey. The vessel, with a deadweight tonnage (DWT) of 7,500, is the second of a series of four tankers the company is adding to its fleet.
Equipment and design
Listraum is fitted with LNG multi-fuel engines, battery systems and shore power connection, allowing her to remain in port with zero local emissions. The vessel features an optimized hull, is registered under the Norwegian International Ship Register and classed by Bureau Veritas. According to the shipyard, the design enables high-capacity loading and discharging, faster berthing times and efficient tank cleaning.
Second of four vessels
The first ship in the series, M/T Havstraum, was delivered in January, according to Hellenic Shipping News, while Baird Maritime specified that the delivery took place on January 20. In 2022, Høglund Marine Solutions was contracted to supply all four vessels with automation, energy management, hybrid-electric propulsion and digital systems, as well as a fuel gas supply system. The tankers, fitted with stainless steel tanks, are intended to operate in the Baltic and North Sea and will replace older tonnage in Utkilen's fleet.
Utkilen has not disclosed further details regarding deployment plans for Listraum or the expected delivery dates for the remaining two vessels in the series.
LNG market context
According to data from classification society DNV cited by Ship & Bunker, the global fleet of LNG-powered vessels currently comprises 953 ships, with a further 759 to be added before 2030. The outlet added that LNG is considered a more mature and readily available fuel than methanol, although methane slip reduces its climate benefit, which is why bio-LNG is emerging as a cleaner option already being used by vessels in Europe.
