The Port Authority of València (APV) has launched the tender for the works to build a second electrical substation at the Port of Valencia, named ST2, with the aim of meeting the growing energy demand the facility will face in the coming years. The initiative was authorized by the Council of Ministers at the proposal of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility.
Investment and Timeline
The project will involve an estimated investment of €18.7 million, equivalent to around $20.8 million, with an execution period of 20 months. The project has backing from the European Commission through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) mechanism.
Capacity and Operation
The new ST2 will operate alongside the existing ST1 substation, with a shared capacity of between 40 and 90 megawatts depending on the feed line used, whether from ST-Aqua or ST-Punta. The infrastructure will allow the APV's power supply network in the port's northern area to be interconnected with the high-voltage distribution grid, and by having two independently operated substations with separate connections, the resilience of the port's electrical system will be strengthened.
Operational Continuity and Technology
In the event of grid incidents, maintenance work or extraordinary demand peaks, the port's internal network will be able to draw power from the second substation without interrupting terminal activity, which is key for critical operations such as crane functioning or power supply to refrigerated containers. The facility will incorporate GIS technology, which houses high-voltage equipment in sealed circuits to reduce the risk of contaminant fluid leaks into the ground or sea.
Port Electrification
The expanded power capacity will support the rollout of Onshore Power Supply (OPS) systems, which allow berthed vessels to connect to the shore power grid and shut down their auxiliary engines during their stay in port, thereby reducing emissions and the acoustic impact of port activity. In this way, Valenciaport aims to support the growth of terminal activity, concession-holding companies, and the electrification of equipment and operations at the facility.
