Wärtsilä signed a five-year service agreement with Finnish shipping company Viking Line covering the passenger ferry Viking XPRS. Under this contract, the vessel becomes the third in Viking Line's fleet to benefit from the lifecycle support services offered by the technology company, as part of a long-standing cooperation between the two companies. The order was booked by Wärtsilä in the second quarter of 2026.
Scope of the agreement
The agreement was tailored to the operational requirements of the Viking XPRS, which serves the Helsinki-Tallinn route, and covers the Wärtsilä engines installed on board the vessel. According to the sources, the aim is to improve reliability and operational efficiency, increase the predictability of maintenance costs and maximize the vessel's availability. To achieve this, the contract includes maintenance planning, scheduled spare parts, tailored maintenance support and a dedicated contract manager overseeing all maintenance tasks.
Previous experience with Viking Grace and Viking Glory
Mathias Sundberg, technical manager at Viking Line, noted that the company's experience with Wärtsilä's service agreements on the vessels Viking Grace and Viking Glory demonstrated the value of a proactive and structured maintenance approach. He added that extending this model to the Viking XPRS reinforces the shipping company's focus on reliability, operational efficiency, environmental performance and predictable lifecycle costs across its fleet.
Wärtsilä's perspective
For Wärtsilä's part, Henrik Wilhelms, sales director for agreements at Wärtsilä Marine, stated that this type of contract shows how the company's lifecycle expertise can generate value throughout a vessel's operational life. He explained that by tailoring the scope to each customer's needs, the company helps operators maximize availability, improve reliability and increase cost predictability, so that customers can focus on their operations while Wärtsilä manages maintenance.
