Viking took delivery of its new river vessel Viking Sekhmet during a handover ceremony held at the Massara shipyard in Cairo, Egypt. The vessel has capacity for 82 passengers in 41 outside staterooms and was specifically designed to sail the Nile River.
Nile Itinerary
The Viking Sekhmet will operate the 12-day 'Pharaohs & Pyramids' itinerary and, starting in 2027, will also sail the new 'Total Eclipse on the Nile' route. Both itineraries combine an initial three-night stay at a Cairo hotel, with visits to the Pyramids of Giza, the Saqqara necropolis and the Egyptian Museum, followed by a flight to Luxor and an eight-day Nile cruise calling at the Tomb of Tutankhamun, the temples of Esna and Dendera, the Aswan High Dam and a Nubian village, before returning to Cairo for the final night.
Sister Ship
The Viking Sekhmet is part of a series of identical vessels and is a sister ship to the Viking Ptah, delivered in August at the same Egyptian shipyard. Both share Viking's signature Scandinavian design, featuring a square bow and the indoor/outdoor Aquavit Terrace.
Fleet Expansion Plan
According to its confirmed order book, Viking plans to add 19 additional river vessels through 2028, 11 more ocean ships through 2032, and two new expedition ships through 2031. With these additions, the company will have 114 river vessels by 2028 and 28 ocean and expedition ships by 2032.
