French operator CMA CGM has ordered a total of 36 dual-fuel 34DF engines from Wärtsilä to power 12 new 18,000 TEU container ships currently under construction at the Jiangnan shipyard in China. The vessels will run on liquefied natural gas (LNG), in line with the carrier's ambition to operate deep-sea vessels with lower emissions.
Order Details
The engines will be delivered through CWEC (Shanghai) Co. Ltd., Wärtsilä's joint venture in China. The order for the engines for the 12 vessels was booked in the first quarter of 2026, while orders for seals and bearings were also placed in that quarter for the first four ships, and in the second quarter of 2026 for the remaining eight.
Prior Experience with the Platform
CMA CGM already operates more than 160 Wärtsilä 34DF engines, a track record that supported the decision to incorporate this platform into the new series of vessels. Xavier Leclercq, Vice President of Newbuildings at CMA CGM, noted that the experience with this engine has been very positive and that its combination of high reliability and low emission levels aligns with the carrier's ambition to reduce its environmental impact.
Wärtsilä's Perspective
At Wärtsilä, Stefan Nysjö, Vice President of Power Supply at Wärtsilä Marine, explained that customers are seeking solutions that offer high fuel efficiency and emission reductions using alternative fuels such as LNG, and that the 34DF platform is a proven option for operators facing increasingly stringent environmental and economic requirements.
Additional Equipment and Delivery
In addition to the 36 engines, Wärtsilä will supply seals and bearings, including its Airguard sealing system, which ensures contamination-free tightness and oil lubrication of the stern tube assembly and the shaft bearings. Delivery of the equipment to the shipyard is scheduled to begin in 2027.
