Technology group Wärtsilä will supply the engines for two new inland waterway pusher tugs being built by Brazilian shipyard Estaleiro Rio Maguari for mining company LHG Mining. Each vessel will be equipped with three Wärtsilä 20 engines, and the order was booked by Wärtsilä in the third quarter of 2026.
Operation on the waterway
The tugs will operate on the Paraguay-Paraná waterway, one of South America's main inland shipping corridors, and will be used to transport iron ore from the Corumbá region as part of LHG Mining's export logistics network.
Scope of the contract
In addition to the engines, Wärtsilä's package includes tools and spare parts, a specific fuel consumption guarantee, commissioning support, and an extended warranty. Delivery of the equipment is scheduled for 2027.
Statements from the parties
Darlan Carvalho, president of LHG Mining, noted that the Wärtsilä 20 engine platform has proven suitable for the company's application and that this new order allows for the continued development of an already proven concept. Meanwhile, Fabio Vasconcellos, commercial director of Estaleiro Rio Maguari, described the contract as a new milestone in the collaboration with LHG Mining and Wärtsilä, noting that the project builds on the experience gained with the previous vessels.
Continuity of the business relationship
Mário Barbosa, Wärtsilä Marine's general sales manager for Latin America, highlighted that this repeat order reflects the confidence placed in the company's technology, local expertise, and long-term support capability. The new contract adds to one signed in 2025 covering the same engines for four similar vessels, and Wärtsilä also maintains service agreements for other units in LHG Mining's fleet.
