Op-Ed: NZF is the Only Option for Delivering on IMO's Climate Commitments
The IMO's Net-Zero Framework maintains majority support among member states despite pressure from the US, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Panama and Liberia. The framework includes a global fuel standard and GHG pricing mechanism applying to oceangoing ships over 5,000 GT, responsible for over 85 percent of global shipping emissions. Alternative proposals from Panama/Liberia/Argentina and Japan lack sufficient support and GHG pricing components. The NZF is scheduled for adoption in early December following intercessional meetings in September.
