Russia Dispatches First LNG Cargo of the Year to Asia via Arctic Route

An ice-class LNG tanker Christophe de Margerie departed from the Arctic LNG 2 plant bound for Asia, becoming the first tanker to sail this year via the Northern Sea Route. Russia aims to boost trade with Asia using this route as an alternative to the Suez Canal, amidst increasing security risks in the Middle East. Navigation opened earlier than usual, reducing maritime transport times between Europe and Asia.
