India Asserts Maintenance and Training Issues Caused MSC Elsa 3 Loss
A year after the MSC Elsa 3 containership sank off India's coast on May 24, 2025, the Directorate General of Shipping filed its preliminary report with the Kerala High Court, citing mechanical failures, maintenance issues, structural defects, and inadequate crew training as causes. The vessel, built in 1997 and acquired by MSC in July 2015, experienced a ballast water system failure that resulted in a 26-degree list to starboard, causing containers to shift and fall overboard. India continues pursuing large damage claims against MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company and its insurers.
