In a statement, the Brazilian Navy reported that the AHTS vessel Skandi Amazonas, registered under the Brazilian flag, ran aground while approaching the anchorage area in the Port of Macaé. The vessel hit a rocky bottom, causing damage to its hull and subsequent water ingress.
"Due to the water ingress, the vessel began to list, so the Captain opted to beach the vessel at a point located approximately 400 meters from the coast of Macaé. Of the 29 occupants on board, 12 were rescued by vessels sailing in the vicinity, while 17 remained on board," reported the Brazilian Maritime Authority.
The Macaé Port Authority dispatched a Search and Rescue (SAR) team to the scene to verify the conditions of the vessel and its crew. No casualties, missing persons, or water pollution were reported.
"The vessel is stable, presenting approximately eight degrees of list to starboard. Water entered one of the engine room compartments, compromising the operation of the starboard main engine. The vessel remains powered by the emergency generator," specified the Brazilian Navy.
The Brazilian Maritime Authority indicated that the company DOF is evaluating the best course of action to resolve the incident. Additionally, an investigation into the causes, circumstances, and possible responsibilities has been initiated.
The Skandi Amazonas, with a Vard AH 12 design, was launched in December 2011. The vessel has been operating in the Brazilian offshore market for several years.
According to a DOF press release, the vessel, with a bollard pull capacity of 324 tons, was chartered by the Brazilian state oil company Petrobras at the time of the incident.
The ship was chartered to Petrobras for a period of three years in 2024, in an agreement that included extension options for two more years.
