Argentina Sanctions Spanish Vessel for Illegal Fishing in EEZ

The Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries detected the Spanish-flagged vessel "Farruco" operating illegally in Argentina's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Sanctions amounting to $1,844,000,000, equivalent to 1,000,000 Fishing Units (UP), were imposed. This is the fifth vessel sanctioned so far this year, as part of the zero-tolerance policy against illegal fishing.

The Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the National Ministry of Economy reports that, in compliance with Provision 20/2026 of the Undersecretariat of Aquatic Resources and Fisheries, it detected a new foreign-flagged vessel operating within Argentina's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). In this regard, sanctions totaling $1,844,000,000, equivalent to 1,000,000 Fishing Units (UP), were imposed on the owning company.

The vessel in question is the "Farruco," flying the Spanish flag, and it is the fifth vessel sanctioned so far this year. In this procedure, as well as in previous actions carried out under the aforementioned legislation, the presence of the Argentine Naval Prefecture and electronic detection technology was crucial for the effective application of economic sanctions.

These measures are part of the zero-tolerance policy against illegal fishing, reaffirming the Argentine State's commitment to defending sovereignty over marine resources and protecting national fisheries.
