StormGeo, Alfa Laval's digital arm specializing in weather intelligence, voyage optimization and fleet performance, has acquired Portchain, a Danish berth alignment software provider headquartered in Copenhagen. The deal closed on October 30, 2026.
With this acquisition, StormGeo adds Portchain's port call coordination capabilities to its Voyage Intelligence offering. Portchain's network connects carriers with more than 200 terminals, representing over 40% of global container terminal capacity. Portchain contributes two main products: Portchain Connect, which enables digital exchange of vessel schedules and cargo volumes between carriers and terminals, and Portchain Quay, which supports real-time berth, crane and labor planning.
The goal of the integration is for changes in estimated berthing time to influence speed decisions while the vessel is still at sea, allowing operators to adjust the voyage plan to bring the estimated time of arrival (ETA) closer to the estimated time of berthing (ETB). This updated arrival information would also help terminals plan berths, cranes and labor. According to Port Technology and Hellenic Shipping News, StormGeo described this setup as the foundation for Just-in-Time voyage optimization at scale, aimed at reducing avoidable waiting time, fuel consumption and emissions, and making arrivals more predictable.
Splash 247 noted that the deal aims to address a long-standing problem in container shipping, where vessels burn fuel to meet schedules only to arrive at port without an available berth. The outlet also recalled that Portchain had recently expanded its client base: in August, Singapore-based feeder operator X-Press Feeders joined Portchain Connect to improve berth planning and reduce waiting times across its network. StormGeo had also expanded its digital services this year by adding real-time fuel pricing to its fleet optimization platform.
Kim Hedegaard Sørensen, President of StormGeo's business unit, stated that maritime decarbonization requires more than optimizing individual parts of an operation, and that combining weather and navigation intelligence with up-to-date port and terminal data allows customers to plan and act with greater confidence. Niels Kristiansen, CEO of Portchain, said joining StormGeo provides an opportunity to bring voyage optimization and port call coordination closer together, and that Alfa Laval's global reach offers a strong platform to extend these capabilities to more customers.
Portchain will continue to operate as an independent company under StormGeo for the next few years, before being fully integrated into its portfolio. Current Portchain customers will experience no service disruption, and the combined offering will be available through StormGeo. Splash 247 noted that the companies did not disclose the deal's price or a timeline for the combined software offering.
