Damen Shipyards Group has contracted EST-Floattech to supply two new energy storage systems for installation on two further Combi Freighter 3850 cargo vessels. The order renews the framework agreement the two companies have held since November 2024 and will bring to nine the total number of vessels in this series fitted with batteries from the Octopus range.
A Standardized Platform
The CF 3850 is presented by Damen as a standardized cargo vessel, with an optimized hull designed for short-sea shipping routes. Damen Cargo Vessels has received orders for 50 units of this new generation over the past five years, allowing successive improvements to be applied to a common platform across the entire series.
Battery Capacities and Applications
EST-Floattech's Octopus systems can be configured with capacities ranging from 240 to 1,320 kWh, depending on the shipowner's requirements. Depending on the size selected, they enable peak shaving of engine load, provide support to the bow thruster, and allow port calls with zero direct emissions.
Company Statements
Arjan de Vries, Head of Procurement at Damen Cargo Vessels, noted that the CF 3850 is a model with a proven track record and that the company seeks to integrate equally proven options, highlighting the reliability and modular flexibility of the Octopus system. For his part, Jelle Meindertsma, Sales Manager at EST-Floattech, stated that repeating installations on the same vessel type allows them to compare performance and improve the product from one generation to the next.
EST-Floattech's Track Record
EST-Floattech, a Dutch technology company founded in 2010, states that it has been involved in more than 300 projects with its Green Orca and Octopus ranges. Its solution includes a proprietary battery management system that monitors temperature, charge, and balance between modules, a control feature considered key to safety and availability in maritime applications.
