Hapag-Lloyd announced the addition of two independent ocean services, named AMX and ASX, aimed at strengthening its container shipping network between Asia and Latin America. Both routes will begin operating during 2027 and will add direct calls and transshipment connections to the region's east and west coasts. While AMX will focus on trade between Asia and Mexico, ASX will reinforce connections with the East Coast of South America (ECSA).
AMX, a Weekly Service to Mexico
The AMX service will begin operating in January 2027 with weekly frequencies, connecting the Chinese ports of Ningbo and Qingdao and the South Korean port of Busan with the Mexican terminals of Ensenada, Manzanillo and Lázaro Cárdenas. As an independent service operated by Hapag-Lloyd, the carrier is seeking greater operational control and improved schedule reliability. From the Mexican ports, AMX will also offer transshipment connections to other destinations on the Latin American west coast, and the company reported that detailed sailing schedules will be available in the coming days.
ASX Expands Coverage to ECSA
The ASX service will begin operations in April 2027 with a rotation that includes Qingdao, Ningbo and Shekou in China, Tanjung Pelepas in Malaysia, and the Brazilian ports of Santos, Itajaí, Rio Grande and Paranaguá, with a second call at Santos before returning via Singapore to Qingdao. One of the service's new features is the addition of feeder connections from Rio Grande to Montevideo and Buenos Aires, which will expand transport options to the Río de la Plata region. Both AMX and ASX will include direct calls at Qingdao, reinforcing that Chinese port's link with Latin America.
Replacement of a Joint Service
According to the Journal of Commerce, ASX will be a dedicated route to Brazil that will replace the current joint service operated by Hapag-Lloyd together with Ocean Network Express (ONE) and Mediterranean Shipping Co. (MSC). The outlet also confirmed that the AMX service, running weekly between China and Mexico, will launch in January.
