Jaxport received a $40 million federal grant through the U.S. Maritime Administration's Port Infrastructure Development Program, aimed at modernizing Berth 32 at the Blount Island terminal in Jacksonville, Florida.
Scope of the works
The project calls for the reconstruction of approximately 274 meters of berth, equivalent to about 900 feet as measured by Baird Maritime, with the goal of increasing the site's cargo-handling capacity and upgrading the infrastructure that supports cargo operations.
Official statements
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean P. Duffy noted that the strength of the country's economy is directly tied to the condition of its ports. For his part, Jaxport CEO Eric Green thanked Secretary Duffy, the Marad Administrator, and the North Florida congressional delegation, and emphasized that the modernization of Berth 32 adds to public and private investments aimed at expanding the port's capabilities and strengthening cargo connections with the southeastern United States and Puerto Rico.
Part of a larger plan
The grant to Jaxport is part of a $498 million package earmarked for 35 port projects in 19 states, announced on October 27. According to Baird Maritime, Berth 32 had been left out of an earlier reconstruction program at the port, and the work corresponds to Phase 2C of a rehabilitation plan covering Berths 30 through 35, which originated after a 2010 inspection detected severe corrosion and led to cargo restrictions; the previous phases were completed in 2017 and 2022.
