Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) has formulated a medium-term management plan covering fiscal years 2027 to 2031, under the slogan Shipping Redefined. The Japanese shipping company aims to expand from its core shipping business into adjacent sectors such as the maritime industry, logistics, energy and various supply chains, combining businesses and functions to boost its corporate value and improve its competitiveness and profitability.
Investment and financial targets
According to Splash 247, the plan envisages an investment program of approximately $8 billion, equivalent to 1.25 trillion yen, between fiscal years 2027 and 2031, more than double the 610 billion yen allocated under the previous five-year plan. The largest allocation, 450 billion yen, will go to the car carrier business, 290 billion yen to energy transport and 230 billion yen to dry bulk shipping, while other investments will target liquefied CO2 transport, offshore wind power, hydrogen and ammonia supply chains, and logistics infrastructure.
The company has set a target of achieving a return on equity (ROE) of 15% or higher over the medium to long term, compared with 11% expected for the current fiscal year. For fiscal year 2031, K Line is targeting group net profit of at least 210 billion yen and aims for earnings from its directly operated businesses to reach at least 120 billion yen, up from the 90 billion yen projected for fiscal year 2026. The company also plans to return between 700 billion and 800 billion yen to shareholders through dividends and share buybacks during the period.
The announcement coincides with a recovery in the company's results: K Line's ordinary profit for the half-year ended in September nearly doubled to 118.4 billion yen, driven by stronger dry bulk markets and higher returns in container shipping. Ocean Network Express, in which K Line holds a 31% stake, reported quarterly net profit of $1.32 billion and raised its full-year profit forecast to $2 billion.
AI strategy and Environmental Vision
At the same time, K Line established its AI and Digitalization Strategy, building on the digital transformation initiative launched in December 2021, with the aim of anticipating developments in the shipping industry through data and artificial intelligence and strengthening its integrated operational capabilities. The company also revised its Environmental Vision 2050 for the third time since 2015, setting a target of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across Scope 1, 2 and 3 by 2050, with an interim goal of improving Scope 1 CO2 emissions efficiency by 40% by 2035, compared with 2024 levels.
