Muelles de Penco, a terminal located in the Biobío Region in southern Chile, unloaded approximately 60,000 tons of corn and soybean meal in two operations carried out between late September and October 2026, as it seeks to establish itself as a port alternative for agribusiness in the Center-South zone.
Two Vessels and a Diversion from San Antonio
The first vessel, of about 33,000 tons, was scheduled to call at the Port of San Antonio, but was diverted to Penco after the client visited the terminal and inspected its facilities. The second operation involved the unloading of approximately 27,000 tons. Javier Valderrama, general manager of Muelles de Penco, stated that the diversion reflects the terminal's capabilities and the bay's conditions, which register few days of port closure, and that the company's strategy is to diversify its cargo mix through partnerships with its clients.
Investment in Silos and Bulk Warehouse
To handle these shipments, the terminal refurbished its silos, with a combined capacity of 13,000 tons, and brought a 27,000-ton bulk warehouse into service, which underwent an industrial cleaning process and was subsequently approved by the client. With these upgrades, the facility now has 40,000 tons of capacity enabled for grain storage, within a total infrastructure exceeding 200,000 tons.
Logistics Savings for Regional Agribusiness
The terminal's location allows it to serve cargo destined for the Ñuble, Biobío and La Araucanía regions, avoiding the need to transport goods more than 500 kilometers by road from ports in the central zone, resulting in freight savings, lower emissions and fewer trucks on Route 5. According to the company, the terminal has available berths and storage capacity for new agricultural bulk operations, with no congestion.
Outlook for 2027
Muelles de Penco expects to continue receiving vessels with this type of cargo through 2027. The company also announced it will take part as an exhibitor at the International Oat Conference OAT2026, to be held in Pucón from November 17 to 20, where it will present its logistics offering for grain import and storage.
