NorthPort, the domestic cargo division of International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) at the Port of Manila, received four new hybrid rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes manufactured by Mitsui E&S. The equipment is intended to strengthen cargo handling operations at the terminal, which is the Philippines' main gateway for domestic cargo.
Modernization and Efficiency
The addition of these cranes is part of NorthPort's modernization program, aimed at sustaining growing cargo volumes and improving service levels as the terminal continues to expand. The hybrid units combine large battery energy storage systems with smaller diesel engines, reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions. Compared with conventional RTGs, the average annual carbon emissions per hybrid unit are estimated to be up to 58.7% lower.
Infrastructure Works
In addition to the investment in equipment, NorthPort is carrying out a structural improvement program that includes wharf reinforcement at Pier 14 and civil works at Pier 16. This program aims to enhance infrastructure resilience to support safe and reliable operations, and is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
Terminal's Role
NorthPort is the Philippines' main gateway for domestic cargo and handles the largest share of the country's domestic trade at the Port of Manila. The terminal connects the Philippine capital with the rest of the archipelago through passenger transport, inter-island traffic, and container handling services.
