The Indian cargo vessel MSV Al Jusufi was attacked by an unidentified aerial object on the night of November 2 while sailing off the coast of Oman, near Limah. Of the 14 Indian crew members on board, 13 were rescued by the Oman Coast Guard, while one of them died from injuries sustained in the attack.
India's Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, confirmed the attack and stated that the MSV Al Jusufi is an Indian-flagged vessel with a length overall of 52 meters and a beam of 12 meters, which had sailed from the port of Al Hamriya, in the United Arab Emirates, on October 31, two days before the incident. The crew member who died was identified as Gandhar Nahim Ajij, from Gujarat.
Official reaction
India's Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement condemning the attack on the vessel and expressing condolences over the death of the crew member. The ministry said its embassy in Oman is coordinating with local authorities on the prompt repatriation of the 13 survivors and the remains of the deceased, and called for an end to attacks on commercial shipping and the restoration of free and uninterrupted navigation in the region's international waterways.
Seafarers' union demands
The Indian seafarers' union FSUI released a statement mourning the death of another Indian crew member and noting that seafarers keep dying in the Strait of Hormuz, the Black Sea and the Red Sea while governments and international bodies limit themselves to issuing warnings that fail to stop drones, missiles and projectiles. The union demanded immediate and enforceable protective measures, accountability for attacks on commercial shipping, and support, compensation and justice for the victims' families.
Other attacks in the region
The attack on the Al Jusufi took place amid a string of incidents in the Strait of Hormuz and the Arabian Gulf linked to hostilities between the United States and Iran. UKMTO reported that a vessel was hit by an unidentified projectile about nine nautical miles northeast of Limah, that a tanker was struck by two projectiles near Ras Al Khafji, Saudi Arabia, and that the Panama-flagged tug Selat Storm was left partially sunk after being attacked. Days earlier, the Royal Navy of Oman had evacuated 25 crew members from another Panama-flagged vessel that caught fire near the Musandam Peninsula.
