Shipping line Ocean Network Express (ONE) took delivery of its new containership ONE Symphony, built by Japanese shipyard Imabari Shipbuilding at its Marugame facility. The vessel, with a capacity of 13,932 TEU, was named in a ceremony held in Japan on October 22 and holds approval in principle for future conversion to methanol or ammonia fuel, as well as the possible installation of carbon dioxide capture systems.
Technical specifications
The vessel will sail under the Singapore flag and was classed by Lloyd's Register. It has a length overall of 335.94 meters according to Portal Portuario or 336 meters according to mundo maritimo, a beam of 51 meters, a depth of 30.10 meters and a gross tonnage of 140,233 tons, with a deadweight of 160,000 dwt and a draft of 17 meters. It is powered by a MAN 7G95ME-C10.6 main engine, identified by mundo maritimo as a MAN B&W 7G95ME-C10-LPSCR with an output of 48,000 kW, which allows it to reach a service speed of up to 22 knots. The vessel can carry up to 2,550 reefer containers.
Operational deployment
Following delivery, the ONE Symphony is heading to Qingdao, China, to join the AX3 service, which connects Asia with the West Coast of South America and is jointly operated by Ocean Network Express, MSC and Hapag-Lloyd. It is the fourteenth vessel in a series of at least 15 sister ships being built for the carrier by various shipyards within the Imabari group, and its delivery came two weeks after the delivery of the ONE Superior, built by Imabari Hiroshima.
Energy and environmental efficiency
The hull design was optimized based on the speeds and drafts most commonly used in commercial operations, and incorporates energy-saving devices, a twisted rudder, low-friction coatings and a wind-protective cover at the bow. According to Imabari Shipbuilding, these solutions achieve an Energy Efficiency Design Index approximately 60% lower than the international reference value. The vessel is also equipped with a hybrid exhaust gas cleaning system, an exhaust gas recirculation system to reduce nitrogen oxides, and ballast water treatment technology. The proposals for conversion to methanol or ammonia and for CO2 capture received approval in principle from the classification society, although the systems have not yet been installed.
Fleet expansion
The ONE Symphony joins other recent deliveries of similar vessels: in September 2025 Imabari Shipbuilding delivered the ONE Strength and in December of the same year the ONE Serenity, both also built in Marugame. According to ONE, the new unit is part of a fleet of 20 ammonia- or methanol-ready vessels ordered by the company, designed to begin service on conventional fuel while retaining the option of conversion to alternative propulsion in the future.
