The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) presented a 10-year strategic vision that includes new port capacity, a pipeline, and the Río Indio multipurpose reservoir, following three days of deliberations at the 41st meeting of the Canal's Board of Directors and Advisory Board, held in Panama City.
Port, Energy and Logistics Projects
Among the initiatives discussed were the Corozal and Telfers port terminals, with a combined estimated investment of USD 2.6 billion, and a 76-kilometer pipeline capable of transporting up to 2.5 million barrels per day of energy products as part of an energy and logistics corridor. The Río Indio reservoir was also evaluated to ensure long-term water availability and sustain operations of the interoceanic waterway.
First Meeting Under New Chairmanship
The meeting was the first chaired by Danish maritime executive Tommy Thomsen, Managing Director of Lauritzen Fonden, who succeeded U.S. Navy Admiral William J. Flanagan as head of the Advisory Board. The Minister for Canal Affairs and Chairman of the Board of Directors, José Ramón Icaza, noted that the Advisory Board's expertise is invaluable in anticipating changes in global trade and keeping the Canal reliable, sustainable, and competitive.
Operational and Financial Performance
During the meeting, the Canal's operational, commercial, and financial performance was reviewed. In fiscal year 2026, 13,951 transits were recorded, up 4.1% from 13,404 the previous year, while tonnage grew 6.5% to 521 million PC/UMS tons, with Neopanamax locks accounting for 52.2% of total tonnage. Unaudited revenues reached B/.6.6 billion (USD 6.6 billion), a 16.6% increase.
McKinsey Participation and Other Topics
In a joint session, representatives from the McKinsey Global Institute discussed how changes in global supply chains and geopolitical tensions are reshaping international trade routes. Participants also received updates on revenue diversification, digital transformation, and the Canal's workforce renewal initiatives.
