The Port of Gdańsk handled 65.2 million tonnes of cargo between January and September 2026, compared with 59.1 million tonnes in the same period of 2025, representing a 10.3% increase. Growth was driven mainly by general cargo, particularly containerized cargo, while liquid bulk remained stable.
Cargo composition
Liquid fuels remain the port's leading cargo category, accounting for around 45% of the total and 29.4 million tonnes handled over the nine-month period. General cargo accounted for more than 36% of the total, while coal represented around 10% of the volume transported.
General cargo and containers
General cargo posted the largest increase in absolute terms, totaling 23.5 million tonnes, 3.6 million more than the previous year, an 18% rise. Within this segment, containerized cargo totaled 21.1 million tonnes, up 17.6%, while in TEU terms throughput rose 21%, climbing from just over 2 million to nearly 2.5 million TEU.
Coal, grain and bulk cargo
Coal throughput also grew, reaching 6.7 million tonnes, 36% more than in the first nine months of 2025. Grain volumes rose 33% to 2.1 million tonnes, half a million tonnes more than in the same period the previous year. The only cargo category to decline was dry bulk other than coal and grain, which fell 1.5% to 2.8 million tonnes.
Statements from port leadership
Dorota Pyć, Chairwoman of the Port of Gdańsk's Management Board, noted that the results for the first three quarters of 2026 show that the port capitalized on favorable economic conditions in key market segments and continues to grow sustainably, combining higher cargo volumes—especially containerized general cargo—with stable liquid fuel throughput and investments that enhance the port's operational capacity and accessibility by land and by sea.
