The Port of Ulsan, in South Korea, completed a commercial green ammonia bunkering demonstration by supplying approximately 800 tons of fuel to the vessel Terra Clove, an ammonia dual-fuel VLAC. The operation took place between October 25 and 26, 2026 at Berth 2 of Ulsan's Main Port, using the pipe-to-ship (PTS) method, whereby ammonia was transferred directly from onshore facilities to the vessel through a pipeline.
The Terra Clove Vessel
Terra Clove is a 93,000 cubic meter VLAC owned by Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) and built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, regarded as the world's first ocean-going ammonia dual-fuel vessel. The ship was named in a ceremony in Ulsan on October 22 and is designed to carry ammonia as cargo while simultaneously using it as fuel, retaining the flexibility to operate on conventional marine fuels as well.
Participants and Statements
The operation was carried out through a public-private partnership involving the Ulsan Port Authority (UPA), EPS, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, and LOTTE Fine Chemical, which supplied the fuel; according to Safety4Sea, Shinheung also assisted with on-site management. BYEON Jaeyoung, president of the UPA, noted that the project demonstrated the importance of collaboration and coordination with authorities and industry partners to advance ammonia bunkering operations in Ulsan and across South Korea, adding that they aim to establish the port as a key hub for alternative fuel supply.
Background and International Context
This operation follows the Port of Ulsan's first PTS ammonia bunkering demonstration in April 2026, when around 600 tons were supplied to a 45,000 cubic meter gas carrier. According to the UPA, the port has now carried out four ammonia fuel supply demonstrations, including operations supporting vessel trials. The development comes amid international progress in ammonia bunkering, after Australia completed its first such operation at Port Hedland on November 2, and Japan carried out a ship-to-ship bunkering operation in September.
