Spain's Council of Ministers, on a proposal from the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, authorized the tender for works to extend berth 9 and fill in berth 8 in order to create a new berth and a multipurpose esplanade at the Port of Málaga, for an amount of around €48.4 million.
Project objective
The works aim to respond to the increase in dry bulk traffic at the port, particularly the growth of agri-food operations and forecasts for expansion in that segment. To this end, the berthing line will be extended and more than 70,000 additional square meters of storage area will be made available, which will boost the port's operational and logistics capacity.
Scope of the works
The plan calls for two berth alignments made up of reinforced concrete caissons: the extension of the current berth 9 by about 87 meters, enabling the terminal to handle two container ships simultaneously, and the construction of the new berth 8, roughly 263 meters long. In addition, the North and South jetties of the fishing basin and part of the Poniente breakwater will be demolished, along with the removal of the parapet wall of the current Poniente quay-breakwater and part of the riprap at the northern closure of the berth 9 esplanade.
Investment framework
The works are part of the Málaga Port Authority's 2026-2030 Investment Plan, agreed with Puertos del Estado under the line known as Enclosure of the fishing basin and new berth No. 8. The state port system's Horizonte 2030 investment plan envisages more than €130 million in investment at the Port of Málaga to improve its competitiveness and drive growth, with which the terminal aims to establish itself as a strategic hub in the Mediterranean for international trade in agri-food bulk cargo.
