YPF filed its application for enrollment in the Incentive Regime for Large Investments (RIGI) for the Bajo del Toro project, an unconventional oil development located in the northern part of the Vaca Muerta formation, in Neuquén province, involving an estimated investment of US$8.729 billion over the course of its execution.
The initiative covers the Bajo del Toro and Bajo del Toro Norte blocks. YPF holds a 65% stake and operates both blocks, while Vista Energy Argentina S.A.U. holds the remaining 35%. The plan combines well drilling with the construction of infrastructure for the treatment and transport of oil and associated gas.
Production and wells
The project aims to reach a production plateau of approximately 80,000 barrels of oil per day, along with 3 million cubic meters per day of associated gas, between 2033 and 2040. To sustain that level of activity, the program envisages drilling 440 wells over the life of the development.
Exports and jobs
According to YPF's filing, Bajo del Toro could generate exports worth around US$25 billion between 2027 and 2055. The company also estimates that the project will create approximately 2,900 direct jobs during the construction and production phases, and will boost activity among suppliers and companies linked to the industry.
Part of a larger plan
Bajo del Toro is the first of three RIGI applications YPF will submit to develop the northern area of Vaca Muerta, a package involving an estimated gross investment of US$44 billion over 26 years, the drilling of around 2,200 wells and a projected peak production of 270,000 barrels per day of shale oil, according to the company led by Horacio Marín.
