Danube River Water Levels Hit 30-Year Low, Disrupting Shipping and Agriculture
Water levels in Romania's Danube river section fell to their lowest since 1996 over the weekend, reaching 1,700 cubic metres per second against a July average of 4,700. The decline prompted irrigation restrictions for farmers and suspended several ferry services and grain barges. Prolonged heatwaves and drought across Europe contributed to the crisis, with Western Europe's average peak temperature forecast at 26.2 degrees Celsius, 2.7 degrees above normal for July 20.
