Oil Spill from Grounded Tanker Spreads 390 Square Kilometers off Oman
Leaking crude oil from the grounded tanker Caroline Bezengi has created a slick covering some 390 square kilometers off Oman's Hallaniyat Islands, according to the country's Environment Authority. The vessel, loaded with close to one million barrels of Russian oil, first reported difficulties on June 8 off Yemen. Greenpeace estimated the slick at around 600 square kilometers, while experts warn the spill requires immediate dispersant spraying and containment efforts to prevent further environmental damage.
