Six Saudi Supertankers Reroute From Gulf of Aden Amid Houthi Threats
Six Saudi-flagged supertankers have changed course in the Gulf of Aden and are heading to southern Africa following threats by Yemen's Houthi movement to target Saudi shipping, according to ship-tracking data from August 3. The empty vessels, each capable of carrying two million barrels of crude oil, opted to reroute via the Cape rather than transit the Bab el-Mandeb chokepoint, adding at least 25 additional days of sailing time. The Iran-aligned Houthis declared a maritime embargo against Saudi Arabia on July 20, prompting London's marine insurance market to widen its "high risk" zone in the Red Sea.
