The Zaragoza Maritime Terminal (tmZ) celebrated a double milestone today: its 25th anniversary and the inauguration of the final phase of its facilities' expansion. This strategic action culminates five years of transformation of its facilities and strengthens its role as Aragon's gateway to international markets.
The event was attended by representatives of the Government of Aragon; the mayor of Zaragoza and president of tmZ, Natalia Chueca; the president of the Port of Barcelona, José Alberto Carbonell; and the president of Mercasa, José Manuel Miñones, as well as prominent representatives from the business, logistics, and railway sectors.
The day began exceptionally with a journey aboard a historic train from Zaragoza Delicias station. A commemorative trip to celebrate the trajectory of an infrastructure that, since its launch in 2001, has decisively contributed to the internationalization of the Aragonese economy and the development of more efficient and sustainable solutions.
During the inauguration ceremony, the president of the Port of Barcelona, José Alberto Carbonell, highlighted that "celebrating 25 years of tmZ is celebrating an absolute success story of vision, interregional collaboration, and intermodality. tmZ has shown that logistics has no geographical limits, managing to transform a landlocked territory into the main backbone of peninsular logistics."
For her part, the mayor of Zaragoza and president of tmZ, Natalia Chueca, emphasized that "this expansion is not an isolated project. It is another piece of a long-term strategy that is placing Zaragoza at the center of major European economic flows," said the president of tmZ, who added that the objective is to "definitively consolidate Zaragoza as one of the great strategic enclaves for logistics and international trade in Europe."
The managing director of tmZ, Ramón Adé, highlighted that this expansion "is another step on a path of collective success that positions us as national leaders in activity and capacity." "We want tmZ to continue evolving to become a large logistics hub specialized in international maritime trade, where the development of a future Logistics Activities Zone (ZAL) will be key to attracting new investments and generating quality employment in Aragon," Adé added.
The inaugurated expansion represents a new qualitative leap in tmZ's capacity and operational efficiency. The comprehensive project has allowed the terminal's surface area to increase by 50,000 square meters, railway lines to be extended to 1,000 meters in length, and storage and management capacity to be increased.
The main technical novelty is the implementation of a new railway connection that definitively transforms tmZ into a through terminal. This arrangement allows trains to enter and exit from both ends of the infrastructure, eliminating unnecessary maneuvers, optimizing operating times, and increasing the fluidity of railway traffic. In addition, the terminal has 50% more storage capacity, consolidating tmZ as one of the inland terminals with the largest capacity in Spain.
In the past year 2025, tmZ reached 85,418 UTIs, a historic record that positioned it as a national leader in container movement and consolidated it as the largest intermodal logistics hub in inland Southern Europe.
This sectoral leadership was recently recognized with the Corredores 2026 Award in the Logistics Terminal category, an award granted by ADIF, whose presentation coincided with the celebration of the last International Logistics Exhibition (SIL) in Barcelona.
After a quarter-century of history, tmZ begins a new operational stage with the aim of continuing to connect Aragon with the world, strengthening the competitiveness of its business fabric, and contributing to Zaragoza's positioning as one of Europe's main logistics hubs.
