Cargo traffic continued to rise at the Port of Barcelona during May, exceeding 30 million tons accumulated since January, a 4.4% increase compared to the same period last year. This positive performance has been driven by the increase in traffic of full import and transit containers, two of the traffic segments that are growing the most in a month that has registered positive behavior in all types of traffic.
Thus, global container traffic has increased by a similar measure to total cargo, growing by 4.3% to 1,611,488 TEUs. Full import and transit containers have grown the most, with increases of 5.7% and 8% respectively. This increase, which highlights a 14.6% growth in imports from Southeast Asia, has compensated for the 11% reduction experienced by export containers in the first five months of the year.
Despite moderating the significant growth experienced in the first months of the year, bulk liquids also maintained good performance, increasing their traffic by 8.2% to a total of 7.2 million tons until May. Biofuels and chemical products have been the protagonists of this growth, with increases of 56% and 52% respectively. Bulk solids, in turn, registered an almost identical increase of 8.3%, with substantial increases in potash exports (+28.8%) and soybean traffic (+27.7%).
Automobile traffic also maintained an upward trend, increasing by 4.6% to 314,711 units. Imports, which grew almost 30%, compensated for the decrease in cabotage operations, while exports remained in line with the accumulated total of the previous year. By vehicle type, electric or hybrid vehicles continued to increase strongly (+77.7%) and represent 17.6% of the total.
Regarding Ro-Ro traffic, in the first five months of the year, 181,905 Intermodal Transport Units were moved, a 2.1% increase compared to 2025. By country, increases of 43% and 48% in exchanges with Morocco and Algeria respectively stand out, as well as a 7.2% growth in short-sea shipping traffic with Italy.
Finally, regarding passenger movement, a total of 1,793,353 movements occurred, a 4.4% increase compared to the previous year. Of these, 488,181 movements correspond to ferry passengers, a 3.3% increase, while in the cruise section, a total of 784,762 cruise passengers visited the city of Barcelona*, an identical increase to that registered by ferry passengers.
