The vessel was built at the Sakaide Shipyard of Kawasaki Heavy Industries where the naming ceremony was also held. The vessel is the eighth NYK-ordered LPG carrier that has dual fuel capabilities and can run on LPG in addition to traditional Heavy Fuel Oil. The vessel also features using the main propeller shaft to power onboard generators, further reducing the need for diesel and increasing reliance on LPG.
The Lyla Pathfinder is flagged in Panama and is expected to be chartered by BGN INT FZCO; a UAE-based LPG trader, as soon as it is completed. The vessel has a length of 229.9 metres, a beam of 37.2 metres, and capacity of 86,935 cubic metres, befitting a VLCC.
LPG as a fuel in marine engines generates 95% lower sulfur oxides and 20% lower greenhouse gases in exhaust gases. The vessel can also be adapted to transport ammonia, another alternative fuel which is carbon free and does not emit Co2 upon combustion at all.
