Phytosanitary Emergency Area for Red Palm Weevil Expanded

The National Agri-Food Health and Quality Service (SENASA) expanded the area under Phytosanitary Emergency due to the presence of the Red Palm Weevil (*Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Olivier ) which now covers the provinces of **Buenos Aires and Entre Ríos.\n\nThe measure, established by Disposition DNPV N° 2/2026 published in the Official Gazette, modifies SENASA's Resolution N° 133/2026. Furthermore, the regulation extends the validity of the Phytosanitary Emergency until June 30, 2028, with the aim of continuing on-site actions and strengthening pest prevention, surveillance, and control tasks.\n\nThe decision responds to the recent discovery of the pest in the continental territory of Entre Ríos province and the current development of contingency actions being carried out on Martín García Island, in Buenos Aires province. Given this situation, it is necessary to strengthen measures aimed at preventing its dispersion, promoting its early detection, and advancing control actions.\n\n##### Prevention, Surveillance, and Control Actions\n\nThe Red Palm Weevil is a pest that affects different palm species and can cause their deterioration and death. Its early detection is fundamental for implementing measures that reduce the risk of dispersion to new areas.\n\nIn this context, SENASA develops surveillance and monitoring actions and works in coordination with national, provincial, and municipal organizations to strengthen detection and response to the presence of the pest.\n\nThe Phytosanitary Emergency establishes the framework to continue and strengthen these actions, according to the evolution of the situation and the results of the surveillance and control tasks carried out in the affected areas.\n\nSENASA reminds of the importance of not transporting suspicious insects, palm trees, or plant parts from areas where the pest has been detected, as these movements can contribute to its dispersion.\n\nIn case of detecting suspicious specimens or symptoms compatible with the presence of the Red Palm Weevil, notify SENASA at local offices, by contacting: dief@senasa.gob.ar, or through the complaint form on SINAVIMO.
