With the aim of strengthening apiary health and the monitoring of diseases affecting bees, the National Agri-Food Health and Quality Service (SENASA) provided an informative talk to producers on the small hive beetle (SHB) and varroosis, together with the Secretariat of Agricultural Development of Salta province.
During the meeting, which was held virtually, the professionals from SENASA's NOA Norte Regional Center highlighted the importance of preventive measures to avoid both diseases.
Regarding the SHB, special emphasis was placed on its morphological characteristics for identification, the monitoring tasks that must be carried out in apiaries, and the preventive measures to be considered, due to its presence in some neighboring countries in the region, such as Bolivia and Paraguay, and because of the high epidemiological risk posed by the health alert - SENASA Resolution N° 302.
Furthermore, it was highlighted that its introduction to Argentina could cause serious productive and commercial damage to the beekeeping chain and honey exports.
Regarding Varroa, a video was shown explaining the main aspects of the parasitosis, monitoring, treatments, and the methodology for sampling.
Finally, it was reported that any suspected presence of SHB must be immediately and obligatorily reported to the health authority, via: WhatsApp at (11) 5700-5704; by email to notificaciones@senasa.gob.ar; using the "Avisá al SENASA" web form; in person or by phone, at their offices or with form N° 6144 (Bees. Suspected SHB) through the “SIG APP Formularios” App.
For more information on the SHB, access the official website or contact via the WhatsApp bot.
