Two former combatants of the Argentine Naval Prefecture (PNA), protagonists of the defense of national sovereignty during the South Atlantic War, visited the city of Mar del Plata this Friday, where they were received by local authorities and gave an emotional lecture as part of the "Malvinas Connection" series.
In the morning, Prefect Major and Malvinas War Veteran Osvaldo Aguirre and Assistant Major and Malvinas War Veteran Marcirio De Los Santos arrived at the Force's headquarters in Mar del Plata.
During the meeting, both veterans shared their experiences and memories of the war with the personnel of the Mar del Plata Prefecture, in which they participated as crew members of the GC-82 "Islas Malvinas" coast guard vessel.
The vessel was involved, on May 1, 1982, in the Prefecture's first air-naval combat, when it responded to an attack by a British military Sea Lynx helicopter, which opened fire with a machine gun against the coast guard in the vicinity of Annunciation Bay.
After the talk, Aguirre and De Los Santos toured the Maritime Traffic Management Center, a strategic unit from which the national Maritime Authority monitors the movement of vessels, coordinates search and rescue operations, and contributes to the safeguarding of human life at sea.
Subsequently, accompanied by the head of the local Prefecture, Prefect Major José Cristian Abel Vigano, they moved to the Municipal Palace, where they were received by authorities of the Municipality of General Pueyrredon.
First, the veterans met with the president of the Honorable Deliberative Council of General Pueyrredon, Mr. Emiliano Recalt, with whom they shared a pleasant conversation and received institutional gifts.
Then, they were received by the municipal mayor, Mr. Agustín Neme, who gave them a warm welcome and held a meeting with both former combatants, during which he offered his availability for future meetings and activities.
Finally, Aguirre and De Los Santos participated as speakers in the "Malvinas Connection" series, organized by the Center for Former Malvinas Combatant Soldiers of the city.
Before an audience composed of institutional personnel, former combatants, and the general public, the veterans shared their experiences and memories of those days, in an exhibition that evoked deep emotion.
