The Argentine Naval Prefecture today honored the first National Naval Prefect and Captain of Ports of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata, Prefect General post mortem Martín Jacobo José Thompson, on the 207th anniversary of his passing. Additionally, on this date, the Institution paid tribute to personnel fallen in the line of duty.
The ceremony took place at the cenotaph located in front of the Guardacostas Building, the central headquarters of the Prefecture, and was presided over by the Secretary General and Director of Planning, Prefect General Marcelo del Giorgio, accompanied by the Director of Judicial Police, Maritime and Port Protection, Prefect General Luis Alberto Gularte. Also present were Malvinas war veterans, as well as senior and junior personnel of the Force.
It is worth noting that Thompson was born in Buenos Aires on April 23, 1777, and in 1806, he was appointed Captain of Port for his outstanding participation during the English invasions.
On October 23, 1819, he passed away during an official diplomatic mission, leaving a fundamental legacy in the history and development of the national Maritime Authority.
In commemoration of his death, every October 23, the Argentine Naval Prefecture also remembers the men and women of the Institution who gave their lives in the line of duty, honoring their memory, vocation of service, and commitment to the Homeland.
