Shipping company Fred. Olsen Express surpassed one million tonnes of cargo transported between January and October 2026, reaching 1,010,000 tonnes, up 2% from the same period in 2025. Accumulated cargo volume in lane metres reached 1.45 million, representing a year-on-year increase of 4%, according to company data released by various specialized media outlets.
More sailings and cargo composition
The company's operations totaled around 19,000 sailings between fast ferries and Ro-Ro vessels in the first ten months of the year, a figure in line with that recorded in 2025. The Ro-Ro vessels, dedicated exclusively to freight transport, made 1,273 sailings, up 6% from the same period the previous year. Food accounted for around 40% of the volume transported, water and other beverages around 30%, parcels approximately 5%, and textile products 3%. In addition, the Ro-Ro vessels carried more than 3,000 units of dangerous goods between January and October.
A fleet of three freighters
The growth is underpinned by the fleet of Fred. Olsen Cargo Express, the cargo division the shipping company created in 2024 to reinforce the freight activity it already carried out on its passenger vessels. The fleet consists of the Bentayga Cargo and Bahía Cargo, each with capacity for up to 1,800 lane metres and 9,000 tonnes, joined in July 2025 by the Breñas Cargo, 138.5 metres in length overall, with capacity for 1,500 lane metres and 7,000 tonnes.
Routes and statements
Fred. Olsen Express's fleet director, Juan Ignacio Liaño, stated that the company offers routes tailored to market needs and alternatives for all types of cargo, and highlighted that the regularity of sailings allows it to connect the Canary Islands with mainland Spain in under 48 hours and, through its logistics network, facilitate access to other European destinations. The shipping company maintains daily connections between the capital islands and the eastern islands, a weekly rotation with La Palma, and links to the mainland via Huelva.
Trend compared to previous years
Compared with 2023, the volume transported by Fred. Olsen Express rose 54% in tonnes and 37% in lane metres. Throughout all of 2025, the shipping company had transported 1.2 million tonnes of cargo across 1.67 million lane metres, according to data released by Baird Maritime.
