LonjaGijón has concluded the 2026 albacore tuna season with the best results in its history. From its facilities in El Musel, 2,365,900 kilos of albacore tuna were auctioned this year, valued at €10,215,653.81. This result represents a significant improvement over recent seasons and strengthens the role of the Gijón fish market in the commercialization of this species.
The figures for this season far exceed those of recent years: in 2025, 1,490,000 kilos were commercialized for an approximate amount of €6.52 million, meaning the volume auctioned in 2026 increased by approximately 59% and the sales value by 57%. This evolution also improves upon the records of 2024, when 1,262,000 kilos and €5.7 million were reached, and those of 2023, with 1,588,648 kilos auctioned for a value of €6.15 million.
Throughout the season, which ran from June 11 to October 15, a total of 200 landings were registered, with particularly intense activity during the month of July. In that period, nearly 900,000 kilos were auctioned, approximately 38% of the total for the season, at a time when albacore tuna schools were about two hours' sailing from the port of Gijón. This circumstance coincided with the arrival of significant volumes of catches and two of the busiest days, during which landings close to 150,000 kilos each were recorded.
The first landing of the season corresponded to the María Digna, from Bermeo, which arrived at the Gijón fish market with 2,217 kilos of albacore tuna, while the last, on October 15, was the Kaximirona, from Getaria, with 3,100 kilos.
The results of this season position the El Musel fish market as the one with the largest volume of albacore tuna auctioned in Asturias, concentrating 58% of the total commercialized in the Principality. Furthermore, the kilos landed at its facilities are equivalent to approximately 14% of the albacore tuna quota assigned to the fleet for the 2026 season. Of this quota, 63% has been consumed, leaving 37% unconsumed, approximately 10 million kilos.
LonjaGijón's shareholders include the Port Authority of Gijón, the Official Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Navigation of Gijón, the Regional Promotion Society of the Principality of Asturias, the Association of Fish Wholesalers of the Principality of Asturias, the Association of Fish Retailers of Asturias, and Conservas Agromar S.A.
With these results, the company closes a historic season, both for the volume of albacore tuna auctioned and the economic value achieved, and consolidates its position in the commercialization of this species in Asturias.
