ADIF has awarded the operation of the Vitoria-Jundiz rail terminal to the UTE TERMINAL INTERMODAL JUNDIZ, formed by the Port Authorities of Bilbao and Pasaia, Medlog Spain Logistic (MSC Group), and Alavese institutions.
The contract establishes an initial operating period of six years, extendable up to a maximum of twenty. The UTE TERMINAL INTERMODAL JUNDIZ plans to move 300,000 ITUs in those first six years. The progression would be: 15,000 ITUs during the first year; 45,000 in the second; and 60,000 in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth years. This progression represents a significant boost for Jundiz, which moved 4,723 ITUs in 2025.
The operation covers approximately 55,000 m2, which includes a 36,000 m2 concrete slab and three electrified stub tracks at their heads, occupying an area of 7,000 m2, which will allow for rail loading and unloading operations.
The facilities also feature 10,515 m2 of internal roads; an administrative and services building of 455 m2; and two parking areas for heavy and light vehicles of 530 and 360 m2, respectively.
The share distribution of the UTE TERMINAL INTERMODAL JUNDIZ company is as follows: 40% corresponds to Medlog, 25% to the Port Authority of Bilbao, 15% to CTV – Centro de Transporte de Vitoria, 15% to the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Services of Álava; 2.5% to the Port Authority of Pasaia, and 2.5% to Servicios Intermodales Bilbaoport, S.L. (Sibport).
The Jundiz logistics hub is a strategic infrastructure for all companies forming the UTE, who seek to boost rail freight transport, improve the competitiveness of the business fabric, and consolidate Álava as a reference logistics node in the north of the peninsula, as well as for the entire Atlantic Corridor.
An ITU (Intermodal Transport Unit) is a standardized cargo unit that allows goods to be transported through different means of transport without the need to handle or unload the goods it contains during the change of vehicle, and includes containers, adapted swap bodies, and semi-trailers and rolling platforms.

Jundiz is part of the Trans-European Transport Network for the structuring of peninsular and European transport and logistics due to its strategic function as the initial point of the cross-border section 'Vitoria-San Sebastián-Bayona-Bordeaux'.
Benefits for the Port of Bilbao and for Euskadi
The Port Authority of Bilbao has welcomed this award and highlighted the benefits of this project for the competitiveness of both the Port of Bilbao itself and all of Euskadi, and has emphasized the success of public-private collaboration.
"The definitive award of the Jundiz rail terminal is magnificent news for Álava, Euskadi, and the Port of Bilbao. It represents recognition of a solid and ambitious project, the result of collaboration between institutions and companies that share the same strategic vision," declared its president, Ivan Jimenez Aira.
"We have chosen excellent travel companions," he added, "and now we have the challenge of turning this infrastructure into a true engine of logistical and economic activity."
For the Port of Bilbao, specifically, Jundiz represents an opportunity "to strengthen our rail connectivity, expand our hinterland, and offer more competitive and sustainable logistics solutions. We want to contribute to consolidating Álava and Euskadi as a reference node of the Atlantic Corridor, strengthening our connection with Europe."
The president of the Port Authority believes that "now it's time to get to work, promote new traffic, and demonstrate the full potential of this project."
