Grounded tanker spill reaches 400 square km off Oman coast
The Caroline Bezengi, a 274-metre tanker carrying close to one million barrels of Russian oil, has created an oil slick covering approximately 390 square kilometres off Oman's Hallaniyat Islands, according to Oman's Environment Authority. The vessel first reported difficulties on June 8 off Yemen. The spill extends northeast of the islands within an estimated seven kilometres of the coast, raising environmental concerns for the protected nature reserve and its marine wildlife.
